Country Road Fashions Review: Bangkok Tailor Since 1951

Country Road Fashions Bangkok bespoke tailor shop on Ratchaprarop Road in Pratunam

This Country Road Fashions review covers the oldest house in my ranking of Bangkok tailors. Country Road Fashions opened in 1951, is still run by the same family three generations later, and works from two shops: one on Ratchaprarop Road in the middle of Pratunam, and one on Sukhumvit 31. Suits start at 8,000 baht, the cloth runs up to Zegna and Holland & Sherry, and both half-canvas and full-canvas construction are made in-house. Here is what I found.

Country Road Fashions Review: First Impressions

Country Road Fashions review
Country Road Fashions, cutting in Bangkok since 1951.

Ratchaprarop Road is not where most visitors go looking for a tailor. The stretch north of Phetchaburi is hotels, wholesale clothing and the back end of the Pratunam market, and the shop sits in among it rather than on a polished Sukhumvit shopfront. That is part of the appeal. This is the garment district, and the house has been working in it since 1951, which makes it older than every other shop in my top 30 by at least fourteen years.

The second branch, on Sukhumvit 31, covers the other half of the city and runs the same books and the same measurements, so you can be measured at one and collect at the other. Three generations of one family have run the business throughout, and the house points to coverage in Vogue Australia and TIME Magazine along with trunk shows held overseas for returning clients. Seventy years of trading is not by itself a reason to choose a tailor, but it does mean the pattern-making was handed down rather than bought in.

Pricing at Country Road Fashions

The published starting point is straightforward:

  • Bespoke suits: from 8,000 baht, around $245 USD
  • Premium mill cloth (Ermenegildo Zegna, Vitale Barberis Canonico, Holland & Sherry): quoted per cloth, typically $200 to $800 above the base price, which is the normal Bangkok spread
  • Shirts, trousers, tuxedos and outerwear: quoted on request rather than published

That 8,000 baht figure puts the house mid-table in my Premium Tier: above the Silom entry shops at $150 and below the design-led Sukhumvit names at $350 and up. It also buys the entry cloth, not the mill books, so decide which conversation you are having before you compare the number with anyone else’s. Because shirt and trouser prices are not published, ask for one written list covering everything you plan to order, either in the shop or through the enquiry form on the Country Road Fashions website. A whole-wardrobe quote is where you have the most leverage at any Bangkok tailor.

Baht prices are set by the shop. USD figures are converted at approximately 32.5 baht to the dollar and rounded, so they will move slightly with the exchange rate.

Fabrics and Construction

The fabric library covers Italian and British mills, with Ermenegildo Zegna, Vitale Barberis Canonico and Holland & Sherry as the headline books. That is the same roster you find at the top of my Luxury Tier, which is unusual for a shop with a $245 entry price.

More importantly, both half-canvas and full-canvas construction are offered, and the garments are made by the house’s own tailors rather than sent out to a third-party workroom. A floating canvas is what lets a jacket mold to your chest over the years instead of holding one fixed shape, and in-house production keeps the feedback loop short when a fitting needs correcting. Confirm in writing which construction your quote covers, because the entry price reflects the entry cloth and the lighter build. My Bangkok tailoring glossary explains the difference between fused, half-canvas and full-canvas in plain English.

Services: Men’s and Women’s Bespoke

The range covers bespoke suits, shirts, trousers, tuxedos and formal wear, jackets and sport coats, and outerwear including overcoats, for both men and women.

The women’s side is worth flagging. Plenty of Bangkok shops will accept a women’s commission and then deliver what is visibly a men’s pattern with the shoulders narrowed. Here men’s and women’s work sit side by side in the core offer rather than as an add-on. As with any tailor in the city, ask to see finished women’s garments at the first visit before you commit.

Turnaround and What to Expect

This is the one piece of information the house does not publish. There is no stated standard turnaround and no fixed number of fittings, which is unusual in a market where almost everyone advertises a number. If you are in Bangkok on a short trip, agree the collection date in writing at the time you place the order rather than assuming the two to three days common elsewhere in the city. If your dates are genuinely tight, the express shops in Silom are the safer booking.

What I Loved

  • Genuine heritage: 1951 and three generations is the longest unbroken record in my top 30
  • Half-canvas and full-canvas both available, so you can buy construction and not just cloth
  • Cutting and making done by in-house tailors rather than contracted out
  • Zegna, Vitale Barberis Canonico and Holland & Sherry on the shelf alongside the entry books
  • Two branches on opposite sides of the city, sharing one set of measurements
  • Women’s bespoke treated as core business, including tuxedos and outerwear
  • Trunk shows abroad, so a returning client is not tied to a Bangkok trip

What to Watch Out For

  • No published turnaround or fitting count; get the collection date in writing before you leave a deposit
  • Neither branch is on the BTS. Ratchaprarop is a hot walk from the Airport Rail Link station of the same name
  • Pratunam traffic in the late afternoon is some of the slowest in Bangkok, so book mornings
  • Sunday is 11 AM to 5 PM, the tightest Sunday window of any shop in my top 30
  • The 8,000 baht price is the entry cloth; budget the usual $200 to $800 more for Zegna or Holland & Sherry
  • Shirt and trouser pricing is not published, so ask for a written quote covering the full order
  • The Vogue Australia and TIME mentions are the house’s own claim; ask to see them if that is part of why you are buying

Country Road Fashions vs Bespoke Suits Bangkok: Which Heritage House?

Both are family houses trading on decades rather than on design, and both start within a few dollars of each other. Choose Country Road Fashions if you want the older record, if you are staying in Pratunam, Ratchathewi or mid-Sukhumvit, or if the commission is womenswear. Choose Bespoke Suits Bangkok on Sukhumvit 28 if you want a published two to three day turnaround with multiple fittings and a 500-plus fabric library, or if you are based around Phrom Phong. The deciding factor for most travellers will be the turnaround, which one of them publishes and the other does not.

Final Verdict: Country Road Fashions Review Score

🏅

Final Score: 4.3/5

The short version of this Country Road Fashions review: the oldest continuously family-run house in the guide, with canvassed construction made in-house and serious mill cloth available, at an entry price that sits comfortably mid-market. It loses marks for the missing turnaround information and for two locations that both involve a walk in the heat, neither of which affects the garment but both of which affect the trip.

Best for anyone staying in Pratunam, Ratchathewi or mid-Sukhumvit, buyers commissioning womenswear, and clients who expect to reorder from abroad rather than fly back for a fitting.

Country Road Fashions ranks #18 on my complete guide to Bangkok’s top 30 tailors, inside the Premium Tier.

Bespoke suits start at 8,000 baht, around $245 USD. That price covers the entry cloth. Shirt, trouser and tuxedo pricing is quoted on request rather than published.

Is Country Road Fashions full canvas or fused?

Both half-canvas and full-canvas construction are offered, and garments are made by the house’s own in-house tailors rather than contracted out to a third-party workroom. Confirm in writing which construction your quote covers, because the entry price reflects the entry cloth and the lighter build.

How long does a suit take at Country Road Fashions?

The house does not publish a standard turnaround time or a fixed number of fittings. If you are visiting Bangkok on a short trip, agree the collection date in writing at the time you place the order rather than assuming the two to three day turnaround common elsewhere in the city.
